I write a lot of technical documentation. Setup guides, API references, internal runbooks, client-facing how-to articles. For the past six months I’ve been using both Claude and Gemini for different parts of that workflow — not because I couldn’t decide, but because I wanted to actually know which one is better at what before recommending either.

This is that honest take. No benchmarks, no synthetic tests. Just real tasks, real output, and where each model consistently wins or falls short.

What “Technical Documentation” Actually Means Here

To be precise: I’m comparing these models on documentation tasks specifically — not general writing, not coding, not conversation. The tasks include:

  • Writing step-by-step setup or installation guides
  • Explaining technical concepts to non-technical readers
  • Rewriting dense internal documentation into plain English
  • Drafting API or CLI reference documentation from code comments or specs
  • Creating troubleshooting guides with clear if/then logic

Both models can do all of these. The question is which one does them better, and in what situations.

Where Claude Wins

Tone and readability. Claude writes documentation that sounds like it was written by a careful human technical writer. Sentences are appropriately short. Active voice is the default. Warnings and notes are placed where a reader actually needs them, not at the end of a section they’ve already acted on.

When I give Claude a wall of internal notes and ask it to turn them into a user-facing guide, the output typically needs light editing — a phrase here, a reordered step there. The structure is usually right on the first pass.

Handling ambiguity. Good documentation anticipates confusion. Claude is better at identifying where a reader might get stuck and adding a clarifying sentence without being prompted. It will often add a note like “if you see this error at this step, it usually means X — do Y to fix it” without being asked. That kind of defensive writing is hard to prompt for explicitly; it tends to appear when the model has a good mental model of the reader.

Consistency across long documents. When I’m building a multi-section document in a single conversation, Claude maintains terminology and formatting consistency better. If I establish that a concept is called “workspace” in section one, Claude won’t start calling it “environment” in section four unless I introduce that change explicitly.

Where Gemini Wins

Technical depth on Google ecosystem topics. Unsurprisingly, Gemini has stronger coverage of Google Cloud, Workspace, and related tooling. When I need documentation for Google Cloud Run deployments, Firebase configuration, or Google Workspace admin tasks, Gemini’s first-pass output is more accurate and more complete. Claude is good here too, but occasionally misses nuances in Google-specific tooling that Gemini catches.

Structured output formatting. When I need the output in a very specific format — a particular Markdown structure, a specific header hierarchy, output that will be imported into a documentation system — Gemini tends to follow formatting instructions more precisely on the first attempt. Claude sometimes interprets formatting instructions loosely and I need to correct it.

Speed on straightforward tasks. For simple, well-defined documentation tasks — “write a README for this repository based on these notes” — Gemini is fast and accurate. When the task is clearly scoped and the output format is obvious, Gemini gets there efficiently.

Side-by-Side: The Same Task, Both Models

I gave both models this prompt: “Write a troubleshooting section for a SaaS product’s help centre. The section should cover: user can’t log in, user’s data isn’t syncing, user sees a 403 error. Each issue should have a plain-language explanation and three steps to resolve it.”

Claude’s output: Used plain, direct language. Each issue started with a one-sentence explanation a non-technical user could understand. Steps were numbered and concise. Added a note on the 403 error section explaining that this is usually a permissions issue — something users often misdiagnose as a bug. Overall felt like it was written for the user.

Gemini’s output: More technically precise. The 403 explanation was more detailed. Formatting was slightly more rigid — each section followed an identical template, which is clean but felt less natural for a help centre context. Good output, but felt like it was written for a developer audience rather than an end user.

Neither was wrong. The right answer depends on who you’re writing for.

Which One Should You Use?

Use Claude if your documentation is primarily for end users — people who are not deeply technical and need clarity over completeness. Claude writes the way a good technical writer edits: with the reader’s confusion in mind.

Use Gemini if you’re documenting Google Cloud or Workspace tooling, or if you need the output in a very precise format that will be consumed by another system. Gemini also has a free tier that’s generous enough for occasional documentation tasks.

For most independent creators, freelancers, and small teams writing user-facing documentation, Claude is the stronger daily driver. For teams inside the Google ecosystem or with specific formatting pipeline requirements, Gemini earns its place.

The honest answer is that both are good enough that the difference matters most at the edges — the most complex tasks, the most demanding audiences, the tightest formatting requirements. For 80% of documentation work, either model will produce output you can use with light editing. The 20% is where the choice matters.
