“Passive income” is usually a lie. Most things sold as passive require constant work to maintain.
But a newsletter with smart automation genuinely does run itself — once you’ve done the setup work. Here’s the honest 30-day roadmap.

Week 1 (Days 1-7): Choose your platform and niche
Platform: Beehiiv vs Kit
If you want your newsletter to be your primary product with built-in monetization from day one, use Beehiiv. It has a native ad network (Boosts), paid subscriptions, and referral programs baked in.
If you want email to complement an existing website or business, use Kit (ConvertKit). Better automation logic, stronger for selling digital products.
For a passive-income-focused newsletter, Beehiiv is the easier starting point. The Boosts program alone can cover your platform costs within 2-3 months.
Niche: the specific beats the broad
“AI tips” is too broad. “AI workflows for freelance copywriters” is specific enough to build an audience. “Make.com automations for Shopify store owners” is even better. The narrower your niche, the higher your open rates and the easier your monetization.
Week 2 (Days 8-14): Build the content foundation
Before you launch publicly, write 4 back-catalogue issues. Use Claude to draft them faster:
- Issue 1: The origin story — why you started, who it’s for, what they’ll get
- Issue 2: The one tool/workflow that changed how you work
- Issue 3: A common mistake in your niche and how to avoid it
- Issue 4: Your favorite resources, tools, and reads
Set these up as a welcome sequence in your platform so every new subscriber gets them automatically.

Week 3 (Days 15-21): Launch and get first 100 subscribers
Tell everyone. This is the hardest week:
- Post on LinkedIn 3 times about why you started the newsletter
- Email your existing contacts personally (not a mass email — individual notes)
- Guest in 1-2 relevant communities (Slack groups, Discord servers, subreddits) with a genuine contribution + link
- Enable Boosts in Beehiiv if you’re using it — start earning from new signups immediately
Week 4 (Days 22-30): Set up the passive income layer
Monetization method 1: Boosts (Beehiiv only)
Automatically enabled when you join. Earnings: $1-3 per subscriber who signs up through your recommendation of another newsletter. Requires zero ongoing effort.
Monetization method 2: Sponsorships
At 500+ subscribers with 40%+ open rate, you can charge for a sponsored spot. Starting rate: $50-150 per issue. Use Beehiiv‘s Ad Network or reach out directly to relevant tools.
Monetization method 3: Lead magnet → paid course
Your free email course (built in Kit or Beehiiv) becomes a paid product. Price: $27-97. Once set up, Kit (ConvertKit)‘s automation sells it to every new subscriber automatically.
What “passive” actually means here
After month 1, the ongoing work is: one newsletter per week (90 minutes), one new piece of content per week. Everything else — welcome sequences, Boosts, product sales — runs without you.
Month 1 revenue potential at 200 subscribers: $20-50 from Boosts, $0-200 from early sponsors. Month 6 at 1,000 subscribers with a paid tier: $500-1,500/month.
